A floating market is a market where foods are sold from boats. Originating in times and places where water transport played an important role in daily life.

In the late 1990s, the Thai government introduced floating markets as part of cultural tourism programs intended to preserve and restore agricultural villages and revive the ancient ways of living along the canals.

Traditionally, most Karen people are farmers who cultivate “hill rice”. They live in villages that are small clearings in the forest. Houses are made entirely of bamboo and thatch. A nearby stream or river may provide a place for villagers to bathe, do washing, and collect drinking water.

The Karen come from the country of Myanmar formerly known as Burma. The Karen are an ethnic group who have resided in Burma for over two thousand years and were one of the first inhabitants of the region.
